Hiding under the Mourvédre alias, Mataro has too often been relegated to the rank of a ‘blends only’ varietal. The time for a Resurrection is now. Driven by the new generation of Barossa winemakers, Mataro is once again taking its place as a single varietal of regional significance.

In 1842 a 32 year old Blacksmith, Christian Auricht, arrived from Prussia with his wife and four children. He settled in the new hamlet of Langmeil and built a blacksmith shop, around which grew the trading area of the village and provides the aesthetics for the winery to this day.

The artisan of iron has now made way for the new craftsman who has blended the oldest of Barossa traditions to forge this spectacular wine. Our Cabernet Sauvignon, the unsung hero of Barossa wine, has been matured for 24 months, achieving the structure, depth and balance expected from this premium Australian grape growing region.

The Barossa Region is known for its viticulture and wine making. At its heart is the Valley Floor, a rich strip of land exposed to the driest conditions and home to some of the most select Shiraz vineyards of the area.

Local knowledge has helped us select and secure prized Shiraz across the breadth and depth of the Barossa while retaining the foundation fruit from the Valley Floor. The combination of hands-on winemaking and vineyard diversity results in pure Barossa Shiraz.

Orphan Bank is testament to Langmeil’s commitment to preserve Barossa’s Old Vine Gardens. Ten rows of our original vigneron Christian Auricht’s pre-1860 Shiraz vines were saved from the bulldozer, the ‘orphans’ replanted alongside Auricht’s original vineyards on the banks of the River Para at Langmeil’s cellars.

Jackaman’s Vineyard is Langmeil’s finest and rarest Old Vine Garden Cabernet. Planted last century and lovingly tended by the colourful Barossan Arthur Jackaman, a World War II paratrooper, boxer and butcher who passed his small plot into Langmeil’s care upon retirement.

Langmeil’s original vineyard, the Freedom, was believed to be planted in 1843 and survives to this day. Planted by our Lutheran forebears who were escaping religious persecution and war in Prussia, just seven years after the state of South Australia was colonized. They came to their new homeland, from ‘Persecution to Freedom’, to worship and find peace in our beloved Barossa.
