In 1842, a 32-year-old Blacksmith, Christian Auricht, arrived from Prussia with his wife and four children. He settled in the new village of Langmeil and established a forge in what was to become a thriving trading post. His original smithy remains to this day and is a feature of the winery’s heritage setting.

Commissioned by George Fife Angas in 1836, German geologist, Johann Menge, madeextensive inspections of New Silesia, now better known as the Barossa. Having surveyed theregion, he wrote a prophetic letter to his employer reporting that “your land is and willprove the kernel of this province.”

Orphan Bank is testament to Langmeil’s commitment to preserving old and rare Barossa vineyards. Ten rows of Shiraz planted pre-1860 were saved from the developer’s bulldozer and replanted alongside the original Langmeil vineyard on the banks of the North Para River. We called these ten rows the “Orphans”, but after 150 years they have a new home.

Malbec is a historic variety originally native to southwest France, whose centre of gravitymoved to the southern hemisphere in the late twentieth century. It is renowned for its ageworthy, deeply coloured, rich, and smooth wines. Here in the Barossa, it makes a real Black Beauty of a wine.

The 1980s were truly tough times in the Barossa. Demand was down, and vines were being grubbed up. In 1985 Carl Lindner was unable to sell his premium Shiraz grapes, which he knew were far too good to let wither on the vine. Instead, he made a fortified wine and left it to mature in French oak puncheons, establishing a practice that continues to this day.Those difficult days combined with Carl’s foresight and inventiveness have laid the foundation for this truly unique wine.

Cabernet Sauvignon’s origins reveal it was the Wild Child of two similar sounding grapes after a chance crossing in the seventeenth century. Growers suspected this due to the shared characters with both Franc and Blanc. Moreover, the name Sauvignon itself derives from ‘sauvage’, the French for wild.

Settled in 1842, Langmeil was the name given to one of the earliest German villages in the Barossa Valley. This name translates as 'Long Mile', which represents the distance from our historic winery site to the Langmeil church and what it means to commit oneself to a life of wine.

A Barossa institution since 1858, the Kegelbahn is where Kegel, the German for skittle, and a bowling game with nine pins instead of ten, is played. Today’s players preserve the values of the game which are enjoyment, friendship and skill, all while sharing fine Barossa wine.
