Six Generations of Tradition
The history of Langmeil's Lindner family paints a rich portrait of farming, food, community, and wine, which can be traced back six generations to the central European region known as Silesia.
Johann Gottlob Lindner and his wife, Maria Rosine John, first arrived in South Australia in 1845 to settle in the Village of Langmeil in the Barossa Valley. Their descendant, Richard Lindner, was one of the original three shareholders re-establishing the derelict 1840’s vineyard and winery property. The Lindner family then acquired sole ownership of Langmeil winery in 2011. Richard having passed away in July 2019 has left the winery in the hands of his wife, Shirley Lindner (Nee Della Mina) and their sons, Paul (family winemaker) and James (family sales and marketing manager), and are the current custodians of Langmeil Winery and their associated Old Vine garden vineyards, Wattle Brae, Jackamans and Freedom.
The combination of Richard’s Silesian ancestry and Shirley’s Italian heritage is at the heart of the family’s work ethic, community spirit, and their undeniable love of food, wine, family, and friends. Both families have deep agricultural roots. The Della-Mina family farmed sheep, chickens, ducks, and pigeons, with neighbours delivering fresh milk each morning. The Lindner family, with four generations of butchers and small goods producers, ensured there was always an abundance of meats and small goods like black pudding, fritz, mettwurst, sausages, and sweetbreads, combined with their fruits and vegetables from their gardens.
For both families, the rural values of farming, food, and community, along with vegetable gardens and cottage orchards, formed the foundation of the Lindner and Della-Mina families, ensuring no one ever went hungry.

“Langmeil Winery is where heritage, passion, and family come together to create world-class wines.”
Building a Legacy of Excellence in Wine
Richard Lindner together with Carl Lindner and Chris Bitter, purchased the derelict Langmeil property. It was their combined dream and vision to reserect what was a ruin of a property and breathe new life and purpose back into the 1840’s European settled and built property.
The idea of having such a rich historic property and vineyard as their home of
fine wine endeavours was their driving force.
A place for visitors can surround themselves in the historic and authentic buildings of Barossa’s first European migrants and make wines that can stand alongside the great wines of the world.
Today, Shirley, Paul, and James continue to honor the vision and foresight of the original shareholders and their husband and father, by elevating Langmeil winery’s position within the world of fine wine. Their legacy continues to be grounded in a foundation of excellence in wine, community, and culture—values they hope the seventh generation will carry forward.
The Lindner family remains committed to preserving the foundations laid by the original settler, Christian Auricht, who founded the trading village of Langmeil and is believed to have planted the Freedom vines in 1843. This dedication ensures that Langmeil Winery will continue to thrive and honor its heritage for generations to come.
