Langmeil is home to The Freedom Shiraz, believed to be planted in 1843 by vigneron Christian Auricht. Escaping war and persecution in Prussia, Auricht travelled to his new homeland, finding freedom in the Barossa Valley. The original plantings still survive and are some of the oldest and rarest vines in the world.

Jackaman’s vineyard is home to Langmeil’s finest and rarest Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in the 1960s during the Cabernet revolution in the Barossa. This vineyard was lovingly tended by the colourful Barossan Arthur Jackaman, a World War II paratrooper, boxer and butcher who in retirement passed his small plot into Langmeil’s care.
Massimo Baraglia left Italy in 1929, seeking a new life for his family. Ten years later, he was reunited with his wife, Maria, and their two children when they settled in the Barossa. They maintained their traditions, growing grapes, making wine, salami and cheese as their descendants do to this day.
Cabernet Sauvignon’s origins reveal it was the Wild Child of two similar sounding grapes after a chance crossing in the seventeenth century. Growers suspected this due to the shared characters with both Franc and Blanc. Moreover, the name Sauvignon itself derives from ‘sauvage’, the French for wild.
Pure Eden is a single site wine, made from an Eden Valley vineyard planted by Charles Angas in the 1890s. Later owned by the Shiltons 1911 -1926; Meakins 1926-1929; Roeslers 1929-1961; Andretzkes 1961-2011 and now the Lindner family. This wine is a reward for these guardians’ efforts for more than one hundred years.

2016 VINTAGE REPORT We are getting used to sampling earlier each year, and in 2016, for the first time, a parcel of Shiraz was nearly booked in for the end of January. Fortunately, timely rain and mild conditions delayed the start of vintage, allowing flavour and colour to catch up with sugar levels. With the dry winter and a slightly warmer spring, favourable flowering and fruit set, yields were generally little above average (except our Eden Valley vineyard which was hit by frost on 1 December, yes, December!). Followed by mild, late summer weather, both growers and winemakers were happy to see another solid vintage tucked away. By early March 70% of our harvest was complete and with another sprinkling of rain, vintage slowed, building flavour in the late-ripening varieties like Grenache and Mataro, as well as excellent results from our Eden Valley reds and whites. We finished harvest with our Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon on 15 April. This vintage highlights how tenacious and robust grape vines are, producing good yields and high quality in a dry season (but they cannot sustain dry conditions forever). Fortunately, a more normal winter this year with much-needed rain is refilling the soil and water resources. Bring it on! Paul Lindner, Chief Winemaker
