Hello

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!

Many are familiar with these immortal lines from Dorothea MacKellar's 1904 poem 'My Country'. Written in the UK by a desperately home-sick 19-year-old, we can forgive her somewhat romantic view of her home. Still, there are not too many Aussies, particularly in the eastern states, who would be overly enamoured with the 'flooding rains' bit at the moment! In our land of ever-increasing extremes, so much of our 'wide brown land' has been affected, if not devastated, by record-breaking floods this year. For all those afflicted, the difficulties are compounded by the uncertainty of what may still come. While such doom and gloom may seem far removed from the forthcoming festive season and celebrations, on the contrary, these events serve to give some real meaning to Christmas.

Many of the hardest-hit families speak not of what they've lost but of how people have pulled together. They express gratitude to the rescuers and emergency services workers who have come to their aid and give thanks that they live in such strong communities.

Perhaps this year, more than ever, Christmas should be a time to reflect and thank the people who make a difference in our lives and give something back by simply being the reason someone smiles. Ultimately, that's what gift-giving is all about. Its worth has nothing to do with monetary value.

For this reason, I like to share wine with family and friends at this time of year. Apart from its ready availability to me, wine always brings a smile to the face of the recipient and the time spent sharing it leaves the heart full long after the bottle is empty.

If considering Christmas wine, in addition to our regular lineup, the following options may also be of interest:

  • The large format Wattle Brae Riesling and Valley Floor Shiraz magnums always impress as gifts or on the dinner table.
  • A wine club membership for yourself or a special someone is a gift that keeps giving all year round.
  • And to help ensure you have plenty of 'smile inducers' on hand, we have a selection of seasonally appropriate six-packs. Click HERE

When placing an order, please remember that the current extreme weather and flooding have caused delays due to the closure of rail lines and major roads. With this disruption and Australia Post's usual volumetric increase at this time of year, please ensure you allow plenty of time for delivery.

The holiday period also gives many a chance to come and visit the Barossa. I take this opportunity to remind everyone that our cellar door is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm, except for Christmas, Boxing and New Year's Days. Tastings are a seated experience, and while we will happily accept walk-ins if we have room, we highly recommend booking to avoid disappointment.

We hope to see many of our Langmeil Winery faithful over the coming months, and on behalf of us here in the cellar door – Bec, Carolyn, Donna, Jodi, Lynne, and myself – may you enjoy a safe and happy festive season.
