Hello
In this age of the non-stop news cycle and media feeds, it's hard to distance oneself from the world's troubles and remain optimistic. Back in the 1970s, famed Aussie glam rockers Skyhooks sang of a 'horror movie right there on my TV' before revealing that it was the six-thirty news. Fortunately, in this country, an antidote is close by in the form of our many beautiful rural and natural settings. We do, however, have to take the time to notice. In her novel The Secret Keepers, Kate Morton poignantly brings to our attention that '…the whole world can be involved in this madness we call war, and all the while, the flowers and the bees and the seasons keep on doing what they must, wise but never weary in their wait for humanity to come to its senses and remember the beauty of life.'
Thankfully, here in the Barossa, with a landscape dominated by agricultural pursuits, Mother Nature demands our attention. Moving to her own rhythms, she calls the shots, and if we are to enjoy the best of her bounty, we must pay attention to her cues. Never more so than at this time of year. As a case in point, vintage 2024 has just kicked off for us with fruit for our Live Wire Riesling picked on January 30 and 31. Last year, the same vineyards weren't harvested until February 24 and 27. A month apart yet displaying almost identical characteristics, it's lucky Paul (our director of winemaking) has his finger on the pulse!
For those who might like to come and celebrate the seasons firsthand, we are delighted to announce our Long Lunch calendar for the coming year. To expand the experience while keeping it interesting for repeat attendees, this year's lunches will start a little earlier to include a brief seasonally appropriate tour before dining. Limited to 20 guests, bookings fill quickly, particularly as the dates draw closer, so make haste if you wish to join the vintage/autumn lunch on 1 March. Click Here
For those who may prefer to celebrate nature's bounty at home and in honour of our first picking of the vintage, this week's wine is the 2023 Live Wire medium dry Riesling. Delivering a lovely hit of sweet lemon and lime fruit on the tip of the tongue, then a slight spritz in a 'frizzante' style that refreshes the palate, it finishes with a beautiful clean acidity that leaves your mouth wanting more. Delivered to your door for only $99.95 per six-pack, this delicious summertime palate freshener is equally at home as an accompaniment to spicy foods, such as green Thai curry, spicy ribs and chicken wings, or salt and pepper squid.
Nurturingly yours,
Jonathan Bitter
