Hello

'I am not a perfectionist. I'm just very observant.'
Chris Van Allsburg

Geographers have studied wine since the early Greek and Roman times when viticulturists realised that the same grape grown in different geographic regions or experiencing varied climatic conditions produced a wine with different aromas and flavours. Though wine has come a long way since the time of Bacchus and Dionysus, the fundamentals remain the same; it's always about climate and soil and, most importantly, the ability to read and interpret them.

As with all challenges in life, keen observation of subtle nuances can mean the difference between good and great. It struck me recently when reading, of all things, an article about the Tanunda Kegel Club. You would think a game where you send a heavy wooden ball 127 feet down the equivalent of an unoiled wooden spoon drain in an attempt to leave only the front pin of nine standing would be challenging enough. However, as revealed by veteran kegeler Peter Nicolai's interview, it's not only the sheer 38-metre length of the alley that increases the degree of difficulty – it's what lies beneath. 'You need to learn to read the track; if it rains, it swells up and moves; if it's fine for a week, it dries out, and it will move again.' So, while to the casual observer, things may seem the same, there are hidden subtleties that can make a world of difference - much like each vintage! Perhaps that's why winemakers love to play Kegel.

Director of winemaking Paul Lindner was paying equal attention in 2018 when he made his Kegelbahn Shiraz. Observing sub-regional vineyards across Angaston, Gomersal, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Stone Well and Tanunda. Monitoring soil moisture from the preceding winter rains. Noting the quality of the flowering and fruit set. Conscious of veraison-interrupting heat spikes. Finally, sending in the pickers as the vines achieved full flavour ripeness slightly earlier than forecast.

To discover how well Paul read the track for what The Real Review called 'Super vibrant without too much artefact. Good line and length' awarding it 93 points, and if a juicy 2018 Shiraz sounds up your alley; Click  HERE  to go to our special offers page to score a six-pack for $89.95 delivered.

Observantly yours,
