There’s just something about Christmas. In our ever changing, hectic and secular world it remains a constant that connects us all each year. Its broad and continuous appeal is perhaps the idea that food, traditions and an arbitrary date on a calendar can be special simply because we decide to make it so. Therein lies the magic of Christmas. Like all ideas it isn’t something you can buy and it doesn’t come as standard. It can be celebrated and experienced in many different ways and yet still be special to all.
When you think about it, it’s much the same with wine. I’ve enjoyed a Freedom Shiraz with a traditional roast on a cold London Christmas and washed down beachside seafood with Bella Rouge on an Aussie scorcher and don’t rate either experience over the other. The common denominator was good food, good company and great wine!
It’s for this reason I like to share wine with family and friends at this time of year in particular. No matter what the location and whether handing out a gift wrapped bottle or pouring a generous glass full, wine always brings a smile to the face of the recipient and it is in giving that we receive.
